Dear Blue Streak Friends:
It is with a great deal of excitement and gratitude that I begin this letter. We had a wonderful year in 2009 under Jeb Field’s leadership. We appreciate the time and passion he put into his year as President of the Blue Streak Scholarship Fund.
On Sunday, October 18, 2009 we celebrated our annual Blue Streak Mass at St. Therese the Little Flower Church with principals, teachers, students and their families. Dr. Mary McDonald thanked Jeb Fields for his year of service to Blue Streak and the Jubilee Schools and introduced me as the incoming President. After the standing room only mass we had an amazing brunch provided by the Callahan Family. It was a perfect way to begin our new year. In November, under the leadership of Peter Lemm and Paul Henley, we put together our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Because of the generosity of so many Blue Streak Contributors and with the help of Piggly Wiggly Supermarket, we were able to provide an entire Thanksgiving meal to 315 Jubilee School families. The 5th annual Blue Streak Invitational Basketball Tournament was held during Christmas break with over 120 teams competing in the four gyms. With over 250 games played, the tournament was a huge success again this year. Thanks to Catherine Pohlman and Corky Parma and their committees, along with everyone at St. Louis Church and School for making Blue Streak the benefactor of their generosity and hard work. In January, Holy Spirity Catholic Church held their annual Trivia Night to benefit Blue Streak. This year was a huge success under the leadership of Nancy Shellenberger. Holy Spirit allowed volunteers for Blue Streak to speak at each mass on the Sunday prior to Trivia Night the parishioners at Holy Spirit showed their generosity by supporting the event and by making individual donations to Blue Streak.
As 2010 begins, we have many projects and activities that are filling up our calendar and providing ample opportunities for new volunteers. On January 26, 2010 we will launch our new website which will become our main communications and fund raising tool. We are working on our Liaison program which provides a Blue Streak Volunteer to communicate and work with each Jubilee School in order to keep up with events and upcoming needs of each school. The St. Nicholas program will be a new opportunity for Blue Streak Volunteers to work with the Diocese to help the Jubilee Schools’ students with weekend food needs. Our annual fashion show will be in the Spring and offers many opportunities for our female volunteers and their children. Our largest fund raising event of the year, the 6th Annual Taste of Jubilee, will be held at the Pink Palace Museum and grounds on Friday, April 23. This huge event had over 750 guests attend last year and the Taste of Jubilee Committee, headed up by Cindy Dorian and Kim Fracchia, expects the crowd to be much larger this year.
Of course, none of what we do would be necessary if it weren’t for the needs of the children of the Jubilee Schools of Memphis. We all truly believe that “education is the key to ending the cycle of poverty in Memphis.” I invite anyone who has not toured one of the Jubilee Schools to take the time out of your schedule to do so. Once you see what these children are accomplishing at the Jubilee Schools, you will want to participate in helping them continue with their success. There are many ways to help – either financially or by volunteering with one of our many events or programs.
Thank you so much to all the current friends of the Blue Streak Scholarship Fund and welcome to everyone that would like to become a friend. Please feel free to contact me or any board member with questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Robert John
Blue Streak Scholarship Fund President
